UK Takes the Lead in Offshore Wind Power

Category: Wind Power |

Britain’s electricity needs are expected to be completely supplied with offshore wind power by 2020. Now that’s an accomplishment that makes the expectations of the average gas mileage of US cars to just average 35mpg by the same time frame pitiful.

What happened to American technological know-how and ingenuity? We’re not looking like the leaders of the free world that we should be. We’re held prisoner by OPEC and other oil producing countries.

At least we do have our own wind power initiatives to consider. The shores of the Northeastern US are prime areas for the wind power industry.

A joint report by General Electric, the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative and the US Department of Energy, A Framework for Offshore Wind Energy Development in the United States, says there is enough power potential to equal all of the existing power plants in the US off our shores (900,000 megawatts).

LIPA, The Long Island Power Authority, a New York-based utility is making headway with Wind Farms, both on- and offshore. http://www.lipower.org/cei/wind.html. The project  "will produce zero-emissions energy for approximately 44,000 Long Island homes and save 13.5 million barrels of oil over the lifetime of the project. It is expected to be operational in 2008 following an extensive regulatory and environmental review. "

A vote was to be held on Oct 2 regarding whether to continue the wind park project or abandon it. LIPA’s media department hasn’t returned my inquiries and they haven’t offered any press releases concerning the future of this important step in clean, renewable energy.

Off shore wind power is a abundant resource and should be taken advantage of. I agree with the US government losing its way. We are no long the leading the way to the future. However I still believe in the America People. Let’s explore every possible answer from solar power energies to wind power. Also the ocean currents are a powerful source of energy.

Great and ambitious project. Other nations should follow UK and Denmark in this field.
